SPOILER-FREE MOVIE RANT
Suicide Squad

The Good:
+ Jared Leto's Joker
+ Good free-flowing action
+ Pretty good performances by Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevinge, and especially Joel Kinnaman
+ The soundtrack!

The Bad:
- Plot... or the lack of it!
- Too many characters, leading to lack of focus on characters that deserve attention
- Too much time spent on introducing the characters at the start of the movie
- What happened to the whole "see how scary Batman is from the villains' point-of-view" thing?!
- Waaaayy to little of The Joker
- So after all the mystery surrounding Scott Eastwood's character, he ends up being just a _____....

The Breakdown

"Suicide Squad Sets Box Office Record Because We Don't Deserve Better Movies" - Gizmodo
"It’s the latest comic book wheeze: an all-villain fighting team. But too many crooks spoil the plot." -
The Guardian
"Like Avengers Assemble forced through a Deadpool mangle, Suicide Squad gives new life to DC’s big-screen universe. So bad-to-the-bone it’s good." - Empire

Just to set things straight; in case you don't already know by now, I am a DC fanboy.

A day or two before the film's debut, negative reviews of the movie started popping up and I thought, "Tsk. It's just the media bashing DC again. Look at how awesome BvS turned out in the end!" Sadly, the media ain't that wrong this time. I am totally in love with the movie, and at the same time, completely frustrated by how bad it is.

First of all, the critics are absolutely wrong to be bashing the plot. Because there is no plot at all! DO NOT expect ANYTHING from the movie's plot.

And my biggest gripe is how individual character development is spread soooo thinly across the two-hour long movie. Quoting The Guardian, too many crooks spoiled the plot. I felt that Deadshot, Echantress, and even Harley could have had much reduced roles in the movie, and with much less screentime spent on their backstory, all for the sake of making way for THE JOKER! Without revealing spoilers, he has TOO LITTLE screentime! You'd be shocked by how little he appears in the movie...

And from my POV, Jared Leto's Joker is sooo much better than Heath Ledger's (I know I'm gonna be slammed for this) and it's such a huge waste that he doesn't appear much in the movie!

Jared Leto aside, I think Joel Kinnaman did a real good job portraying Rick Flag. I didn't expect much from the character, but his acting really really brought out the feels for him. Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Cara Delevinge did well too, in terms of acting, but Deadshot and June Moone's backstories are soooo lame...

But of course, there are redeeming factors to this helluva mess... Most importantly, the action in the film is stunning. It's almost non-stop. And THAT scene of Deadpool taking down the bunch of bad guys just made the hairs on my arm stand.

Second, the humour. Kudos to Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) for providing much of it.

Third, the music. The songs in it are really enjoyable and I really liked how the soundtrack is based a lot on BvS. It actually played a huge part in making the film more enjoyable.

And lastly, and perhaps most importantly, AND also ironically, it's this whole mess of characters that make the movie fun to watch. I mean, it's always fun to watch an ensemble of characters fighting together against the villains.

So, should you watch the movie? Yes you definitely should. It is entertaining and a joy to watch, but don't expect too much out of it.

Once again, remember to check out our great-looking Suicide Squad collection here
